Tools & Materials

Felt

All of our kits & felt shapes use wool blend felt. Depending on the color, it is a blend of 20 - 35% merino wool with the the remainder rayon. It is resistant to pilling and pulling, easy to cut and affordable.  Durable. Dry cleanable.

Thread

Our kits use pearl cotton embroidery thread. This mercerized cotton is actually 2 strands of thread twisted together into a fine yarn. We use 5/2 and 10/2 gauge pearl cotton in our kits. The size 5/2 is heavier and the 10/2 is finer.

The particular brand of threads that we use in our single ornament kits is only available in bulk quantities and not available for retail purchase.  But there are many brands of pearl cotton available in retail stores that stock sewing or craft supplies.

Needles

Embroidery needles are different from other types of needles - the Eye is longer and more narrow.  For example, "Sharps" (basic sewing needles) usually have a round, circular shaped eye. Embroidery needles have a longer, oval-shaped eye. This oval shape helps to accommodate heavier threads and yarns without making a larger hole in the fabric.

Our kits use pearl cotton yarns size 10/2 or 5/2 depending on the design.  We recommend using embroidery needles sized between 1 - 5 to fit these yarns.

We sell needle packages that include 2 differently sized needles. The smaller needle is an embroidery needle sized between #3 - #5 and works best with the 10/2 pearl cotton threads that are included in most of our DIY kits. The larger needle is an embroidery needle size #1 or #2 and works best with the 5/2 pearl cotton threads that are included in several of our DIY kits.
